A woman in prison desperate to speak to her daughter, a patient teenager acting as a go-between for her parents, a life thrown into confusion by an unexpected encounter in the grocery store—these are just a few of the remarkable stories of Nine Lives. Each of the film's separate but sometimes overlapping episodes is a small window into an emotional juncture in one woman's life, each one captured in real time and each in a single camera shot. Using precise detail to expose complex worlds within a matter of minutes, every sequence carefully reveals the circumstances that led each woman to this specific moment in time—often a decisive moment where she faces the consequences of decisions made or actions taken long ago.

This empathetic inquiry into the prisons we often help build for ourselves is meticulously calibrated. Xavier Perez Grobet's seamless camera weaves among the players, never sacrificing precision framing, and the film is a treasure trove of award-worthy performances from both lead and supporting players. Nine Lives firmly establishes director Rodrigo Garcia as a master chronicler of the intricacies of female lives.
