"9 Lives is a gorgeous little movie comprised of 9 separate, single-take stories about 9 different women. Some of the stories overlap and I’m in two of them; one that I’m in peripherally with Holly Hunter, Stephen Dillane and Molly Parker and the other, about a pregnant woman running into her first love in a supermarket, which is just me and Robin Wright Penn. I’ve seen that scene and it’s lovely; moving, real and beautifully written. Robin’s phenomenal. I heard a couple of days ago that the film’s got into the Sundance Festival which is exciting for me not only professionally but also because I haven’t skied since I was 18, so hopefully I’ll get to go and not break anything."

"When I think about the making of the film, what I remember is these long, long nights because they were shot in one night. There's nine stories, and they were a single take and each take was shot in one go, and is just one long night of intense emotion. I defy you not to cry and laugh and feel exhausted by the end of it."

From About.com

Jason Isaacs on the Length of Time to Shoot Each Segment: “Ours took a night, actually. We went through the night into dawn, I think. We only stopped because the sun was coming up. There was a day’s rehearsal. The rehearsals were really more for camera.”

Isaacs had two scenes so his workload was doubled. Laughing, Isaacs said, “A whole two days work. I don’t know how I got myself through it. Traumatic (laughing). Yeah, it was doubled. Lovely double duty. Actually what was great was doing it in the order we did it. I got to see the woman I’d once been in love with and wonder why we didn’t just run off together and then come home and think, ‘What the hell was I thinking? I’ve got a marriage that I need to stick by.’ And I think that’s what the audience feels when they watch it, too.”

Jason Isaacs on How This Style of Filming Affects Actors: “You’re taking the energy off the other actors because you’re all in this dance together. Whereas often when you shoot singles on film, the other actor might not even be there. And if they are, they’re not necessarily present. You’re concentrating on being alive in the scene and hoping the camera is capturing it. And if it’s not, when you get to the end you’ll just do it again.”

Diana (Robin Wright Penn) discovers her heart is tied to the past when she runs into her ex at a grocery store. Both have married and she is pregnant, but soon they are “walking and talking like lovebirds,” as Penn puts it, saying, “Five minutes with you and I feel like my life is a figment of my imagination.” “We’re Damian and Diana,” the ex (Jason Isaacs) replies. “We always will be.” The regrets lie heavily, even after the scene ends.

Nine Lives is number 7 on Roger Ebert's top ten movies of 2005

7. "Nine Lives": Rodrigo Garcia's film involves nine stories told in a total of nine shots. It is not a stunt. Most audiences will probably never notice that each scene is told in one shot, although they will sense the tangible passage of real time. The best story involves Robin Wright Penn and Jason Isaacs as two former lovers, now married to others (she pregnant), who meet by chance in a supermarket and during a casual conversation, realize that although their lives are content, they made the mistakes of their lifetimes by not marrying each other. Stating this so boldly, I miss the subtle sympathy that Garcia has for all of his characters, who are permitted those tender moments of truth by which we learn what a tease life is -- so slow to teach us how to live it, so quick to end.

RobinWrightPenn.net has a fantastic info page up for NINE LIVES

Nine Lives is also  the only US movie in the Locarno Italian Film Festival.

ROME -- As the sole U.S. production in competition, Rodrigo Garcia's star-laden "Nine Lives" will have its international premiere as part of the Locarno International Film Festival's competition lineup. Starring Glenn Close, Holly Hunter, Kathy Baker, Sissy Spacek and Robin Wright Penn, the film is described as a searing drama that follows the travails and disappointments of nine women. The 15 films that will vie for the Golden Leopard -- slimmed down slightly from 18 films last year -- is heavy on European films with smatterings of Middle Eastern fare and a slight Asian infusion. The slate was announced late Tuesday at a press conference in Milan.
